After School Theater Programs

The after-school program began twenty years ago when my oldest daughter and her peers were five. Someone said, “Kathryn, start a theater program for children in Park Slope.” Always game for serving our urban community, fourteen Kindergarteners gathered at The Dance Studio (then on 7th Avenue) for a week of theater – and the Creative Theatrics program was hatched. “Actors On the Stage” was composed and rehearsed, becoming the signature song embracing a child’s view of the wonder of theater. We moved to Brooklyn Society for Ethical Culture and Poly Prep Lower School (then Woodward Park School) and then onto ART/NY South Oxford Space in Fort Greene, Music Together on 1st Street and most recently, Park Slope UMC. Along with a couple of teaching artists, we started a Summer Theater Workshop at the Picnic House in Prospect Park, which further expanded to Old First Church on 7th Avenue and Carroll Street. As a non-profit theater company, we are dedicated to serving our community, and continue to do everything we can to make imaginative and life-changing theater with children. We believe that if you put your heart and soul (alongside new-learned performance & design skills) into working together as an ensemble, magic will happen! We at White Bird know that our creative experiences as children are formative and effect how we live in our neighborhood, our city, and in the world at large. We love what we do, and hope your children will join us in our rigorous merriment!
